Infrastructure Design

Level Strategy and Cut and Fill Calculations

New developments require a deep understanding of the existing levels and how this affects the proposed levels to allow the construction of feasible the infrastructure elements (roads and drainage).

The success of a project starts with a good understanding of the constraints of the site, being highways and drainage the areas that could have a higher impact in cost (i.e. unbalanced materials) and time (i.e. abortive works). The Levels Strategy during the preliminary stages provides the information needed to progress all the disciplines in the project with information that will not differ much in the following stages. This levels strategy provides the required information to produce the Cut and Fill calculations required to assess the total costs of the construction project.

Horas Engineering Ltd. undertake the Level Strategy, including liaising with the design team throughout its production, from the preliminary stages to the detailed design and construction levels. We complete the analysis with the production of the Cut and Fill Calculations to inform of additional or surplus material to be considered for the site, aiming at balancing materials to minimise construction costs.

Utilities information

As part of the construction of the infrastructure of any new development it is required to consult with Statutory Undertakers affected by the works proposed. This process can be long and expensive if not managed promptly and all constraints are considered before any proposal is agreed with the Planning Authority.

Horas Engineering Ltd. undertake liaison and coordination with the utilities companies within the following stages:

  • Preliminary enquiries to identify services in the area of the works.
  • Budget estimates enquiries to identify the costs of the services affected.
  • Detailed estimate enquiries providing diversion or protection of the existing services including design of these elements.
